ATS software doesn't think — it matches. If the words on your resume don't appear in the job description, your score drops regardless of your experience. These are the keywords that actually matter in 2025, by industry.
This guide gives you the highest-signal keywords for ten major US industries — the terms ATS systems and recruiters are actively screening for right now. Use them as a starting point, then layer in the exact language from each job posting you apply to.

Scan my resume free →Keyword stuffing — pasting a list of terms into white text at the bottom of your resume — used to work years ago. It doesn't anymore. Modern ATS platforms, especially Workday and Greenhouse, use contextual scoring. A keyword scores higher when it appears within a relevant bullet point than when it appears in isolation.

Cloud certifications (AWS, GCP, Azure) should appear verbatim — they're commonly used as hard filters before scoring begins.
CPA and CFA are binary filters at most firms — if you hold them, they must appear in your resume exactly as the abbreviation, not spelled out only.
EHR system names (Epic, Cerner, Meditech) are increasingly used as hard ATS filters — list every system you've worked with by name.
Metrics matter hugely in marketing. Pair keywords with numbers: "Increased organic traffic 140% through SEO" outscores "managed SEO strategy."
Bar admission state must appear explicitly — "Licensed in New York" not just "attorney." Many legal ATS filters screen by jurisdiction.
Certifications like PMP, Six Sigma Green Belt, and OSHA 30 are often hard filters. Spell them out AND use the abbreviation on the same line.
State teaching certifications and endorsements must appear exactly — "Texas Teacher Certification" not just "certified teacher."
Quantify everything in retail — "Managed $4.2M inventory" and "Reduced shrink by 18%" rank significantly higher than the same phrases without numbers.
HRIS platform names are critical — list every system you've used: Workday, BambooHR, ADP, SAP SuccessFactors. They're frequently screened as filters.
In cybersecurity, certifications (CISSP, CEH, CompTIA Security+) are treated as mandatory filters at most companies — not just nice-to-haves. List them first.

Scan my resume free →Using synonyms instead of exact terms. ATS systems are literal. "Supervised" and "managed" are not the same keyword. Use whichever word the job posting uses.
Only listing keywords in your skills section. Keywords carry more weight when they appear inside bullet points with context and metrics. Your skills section supplements your experience — it doesn't replace it.
Using the same resume for every application. A keyword list optimised for one job may actively hurt your score on another. Tailor the skills section and professional summary for every role you apply to.
