The professional summary is the section most people leave to last and write in ten minutes. It's also the first thing a recruiter reads — which means it does more work per word than anything else on the resume. Getting it right matters disproportionately.
This guide has two parts: a framework that shows you how to write a strong summary from scratch, and 40+ real examples across 10 industries you can use as starting points right now. Every example is written at a specific experience level and includes the key structural elements that make it work.
Once you've written your summary, run a free ATS scan to confirm keyword coverage.

Not every summary needs all five — but the more of these you include, the more specific and credible it reads. The headline metric is the most commonly omitted and the most impactful to add.
Whatever is most relevant and impressive — your current title, your years in the domain, your most recognisable employer, your industry niche — belongs in the first five words. If you have to read to the third sentence to understand who this person is, the summary has already failed.
A summary with no numbers is a summary full of claims with no evidence. "Strong track record in sales" and "grew revenue by $4.2M across three accounts in 18 months" describe very different candidates — even if the underlying performance was the same. Always find a number.
The summary should make it obvious what job this person is applying for. Either by naming the target role directly, or by framing everything in a way that only makes sense if you're targeting a specific type of position. Ambiguity here costs interviews.
ATS systems keyword-match your summary. Human readers use it to assess cultural and professional fit before they read a single bullet point. Both screening mechanisms reward industry-native language. If your summary could apply to three different industries, it's not specific enough.
"Results-driven," "passionate," "dynamic," "innovative," "self-motivated" — these words appear in most summaries and carry no information. Every character they occupy is a character that could have held a number, a tool name, a domain, or an outcome. Cut them all.

Scan my resume free →The adjective stack. "Highly motivated, results-driven, passionate professional with excellent communication skills." This is the most common summary opening and the least informative. Replace every adjective with a fact.
The objective statement disguised as a summary. "Seeking a challenging role where I can leverage my skills and grow professionally." This tells the recruiter what you want, not what you offer. Flip it: tell them what they'll get, not what you're looking for.
Writing it in first person. "I am a senior engineer with 10 years of experience..." The convention on resumes is implied first person — lead with your title, not "I." It reads as more confident and more polished.
A summary so long it becomes a summary of the whole resume. If your summary is 8 lines, it's eating space that should belong to your work history. Keep it to 3–5 lines. Its job is to earn the read, not replace it.
